Throughout this body of work I focussed on three symbols, the cocoon, the nest and the wire garden chair, to pose the question of the influence of nature vs. nurture. Using the sculpture I presented the details of these symbols in various ways.
The three symbols relate to spaces where species are nurtured and informed. The cocoon and nest relates to the natural space where the species is prepared for the environment it is meant to enter. The wire garden chair on the other hand relates to the white wire garden chair in the backyard of my grandparents’ house in Fouriesburg, a place where I was informed.
Composed from a found wooden chair is the new version of the white wire garden chair in the backyard of my grandparents’ house in Fouriesburg. The chair was restructured into a rocking chair, given a wire frame and seat, with string detail attaching the back and the seat.

A video projection of the chair rocking to the point of almost tipping is projected over the further reconstructed chair that now has a leg missing, one thread leg and two legs that are furthermore disabled. The chair tells a story of a space of being informed and nurtured that had to be remodeled in a new context but also has reached a state of disfunctionality.
